Prof. Jonathan P Bowen, guru of formal methods in computer science was amused and surprised when he learnt that there is a neighbourhood called Bowenpally in India, in Secunderabad city. Yes Sir, we are not kidding. Indeed, we do have a "Bowen"pally, but it is not named after you
The name Bowenpally derives from Bhuvanapalli.
It is
named for the Chalukya king Trailokya Malla Bhuvanesvara of the 10th
century. The State Archeology department found an inscription on a
pillar dating from the Chalukya times, thus confirming the name.
According to the epigraphist late Mr Nemalikanta Mukunda Rao the
inscription mentioned Vikrama V , bhuvana nayada etc who was the local
governor and some jain invocations. ( I could not locate it for a
picture). The old village of Bowenpally with its people-friendly
streets (narrow and winding) still exists. There are few old
structures left standing today except maybe a couple of village
temples. Near the police station there is an old shrine with some
rough sculptures. A small stone bull (very common in these parts)
shows distinct kakatiyan design.
Bowenpally is a sprawling suburb of Secunderabad, India. Locating it is easy. Take the map of Secunderabad (Hyderabad). Look for our Secunderabad airport -- which has just one runway. The runway is a 0927 runway which means that it runs east- west (the red line in this map). Bowenpally (the red ellipse in this map) is just north of this unmistakable landmark. It is part of the Secunderabad Cantonment area, where the British held sway for several years. Today it is a mish mash of concrete jungles, lovely green areas, and "spaghetti bowl" steets which are always full of noisy and unpredictably zigzagging vehicles.
It is also the meeting point of two national highways : NH-7 (marked as Nizamabad Road on the map) and NH-9 (marked as Pune Road on the map). These highways seem to take off from Bowenpally. In fact Bowenpally serves as the gateway to the city when you drive down these two highways. As a result, this is also the point where all our lorries (Indian trucks) stop for some rest and refreshments, before they enter the city. It is therefore, full of "dhabas" which serve authentic Punjabi food (most of our truck drivers are Punjabis). The best place to go, when you are hungry, is these Bowenpally dhabas.
When you visit Bowenpally, do not forget to visit PRIMEVERE, the most eco friendly habitat in this area, and take a look at our eco-friendly venture -- BIOFARM. And of course meet Dr. Partha, the brain behind all this. This map will show you how to locate us in Bowenplly.
