Why e-security ? Security has always been a major concern of humanity. However, electronic security, or e-security for short, has become a hot topic ever since the proliferation of computers and our dependence on them. Networking these machines has made them more vulnerable than ever before. This is where the present seminar becomes relevant. Read on....

Principles of e-security and cryptography

Course Objective

Create an awareness of the mechanisms and principles involved of e-security and PKC. Avoid mathematical abstractions and techno-jargon. Participants need not have any technical background.
 

Course methodology

Highly interactive lectures based on PDF based presentation on a Linux box. I bring my own Linux box. For good interaction, I expect **not more than 20 participants** in my class. One session will be dedicated to hands-on practice on PGP. In case such a hands-on session cannot be arranged -- a live demo will be done in the class.
 

Course handout

I will supply **one copy of my CDROM** containing a very rich collection of tutorial material on crypto and PKC (I update this CD almost everyday). The CD itself is a secure CD, and demonstrates some important principles of security. The CD I give will also contain all the slides used in my lecture. You will have to make copies of the CD for all your participants. No hardcopy/paper handouts will be given (let us not burn any more trees). If you want, I can bring along copies of my CDROM (at additional copying+medium costs).
 

Other

You will be responsible for making all classroom arrangements, and hands on arrangements. Specifically we will need : a good LCD projector, standby PC, class room accessories, cordless collar mike, UPS. A checklist will be sent to you separately, as soon as you indicate your acceptance of our proposal. You should also provide for: stationery, notepads, pens, and a convenient folder for the participants.
 

Breakup of sessions (tentative)
 

1. Session #1 -- Fundamentals of e-security, problems, interruption, tampering, interception, impersonation, repudiation, cryptography, symmetric key crypto., asymmetric key crypto., key fingerprint, digital signatures, signing and verification, web of trust, PKI, certificates.
    
2. Session #2 -- Intro. to PGP, historical background, features and facilities for PKC, secure storage, secure wipe, secure viewing, plug-ins for e-mail agents, keys creation and management, public key servers, precautions.
    
3. Session #3 -- Other e-security tools and techniques. Prime numbers, authentication, passwords, biometrics, steganography, checksums, hamming, chaffing and winnowing. Snake oil. Hacking. And a final message !
    
4. Session #4 -- Hands-on practice session. Use of PGP, on MS platform. Sufficient number of PCs and lab. to be made available. Debriefing.
