April 2002, Melbourne: A follow-on study as to the overall Total
Cost of Ownership differences between Linux and Open Source
platforms on the one hand, and Windows and Microsoft platforms on
the other, has shown a cost saving with Linux of between 34% and
25%, depending on hardware factors.
The study, available here:
http://www.cyber.com.au/cyber/about/linux_vs_windows_tco_compariso
n.pdf
was undertaken on the average computer-usage requirements for an
organisation with 250 users, over a 3 year period. The costing
models included expenses such as workstations, servers,
networking, staff, consultancy fees, Internet Service charges,
file, mail and print servers, e-commerce servers, SQL and network
infrastructure servers, Internet and Intranet servers, line-of-
business software, desktop productivity applications as well as
miscellaneous systems costs.
The prices used for the study, along with research methodology,
vendor specifications, cost calculator tabulations and final
results are all included, so that these results can be verified by
others.
Cybersource CEO, Con Zymaris commented: "As a professional
services business with over 10 years serving customers with both
Linux and Microsoft platforms solutions, we were interested in
these results for our own purposes. However, in light of recent
projected alterations to Microsoft's licencing regime, our
customers have been vocal in their request for such a cost-
comparison."
Added Zymaris: "With a realisation from many business and
organisations worldwide that Linux has drawn parity with closed
source proprietary technologies for server, network infrastructure
and desktop business requirements, factors such as total cost of
ownership and return on IT investment are of particular importance
in the present economic climate. We hope that the results of our
research will reach those best-placed to realise the possible
benefits indicated and assist businesses in making a decision
which best suits their goals."
